Over the past 10 years the BSAVA has delivered a total of 680 courses across all four of the BSAVA Postgraduate Certificates – medicine, surgery, ECC and ophthalmology. Past students and tutors spoke to Companion about their experiences and what their involvement with the PGCerts has meant to them.

  Christina Maunder at Bristol University received funding for a Master’s Degree by Research project as part of the BSAVA 60th anniversary celebrations. The Master’s student, Josh Kennils, investigated diagnostic approaches to feline subclinical bacteriuria and urinary tract infections, and the responsible use of antimicrobials.

 Mary Wakeham is the Founder and Chief Executive of Refuge4Pets, a charity providing foster care for the companion animals owned by victim survivors escaping domestic abuse in Devon and Cornwall. She also carries out sociological research into the circumstances in which people and pets are subjected to physical and emotional abuse at the hands of their own family members. She told John Bonner how her findings shed new light into the dark corners where the perpetrators use animals as tools to help them exert coercive control over their victims.
