Guinea Pig Awareness Week returns for 2022; The BSAVA putting its best carbon footprint forward; JSAP Editor researching honorary authorship

Julian Kupfer, Chair of Trustees at the Animal Welfare Foundation and Liz Mullineaux, a Trustee and Member of the Wild Animal Welfare Committee (WAWC), have co-authored an article on the differences between animal welfare, animal ethics and animal rights resulting from a misleading report published in Companion (July 2022).

 Angie Rupp received BSAVA PetSavers funding in 2014 to investigate serological markers (and potential geographic differences for their sero-prevalence) for acute canine polyradiculoneuritis at the University of Glasgow. Here she describes her project.

The Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA) is a charity hosted by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, a mental health and community trust with a zero suicide ambition. ZSA works in collaboration with NHS trusts, non-profit organizations, local authorities, businesses, and individuals to raise awareness of suicide and its contributing factors. The aim is to break the stigma that surrounds suicide and enable leaders to drive meaningful action to help prevent suicide in the UK and beyond.

  Student members of the BSAVA held a successful virtual congress in June providing online lectures for colleagues at each of the UK vet schools. It was the brainchild of fourth year Nottingham student Sophie Oliver who told John Bonner how the programme also found an audience among fellow vet students across the globe.

BSAVA members are also members of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), an association which BSAVA helped to found and which works to enhance standards of clinical care for companion animals globally.

Chris Laurence is a member of that select band of people who have been made honorary life members of the BSAVA. He is known to the profession as the former chief vet of two of the main animal welfare charities. But he is also noted for his contributions to various other charitable bodies, within the ranks of the British Army as a distinguished and long serving officer in the Signals Corps, and for the residents of Tytherton, Wiltshire, as the main driving force behind the campaign to build a new village hall. John Bonner wondered where he gets the energy.
