This procedure is used to obtain samples from superficial masses that can be palpated well enough to be stabilized, or from masses and organs within a body cavity. It is an alternative to fine-needle aspiration.

Confidently finding the left and right limbs of the in most patients is a common ultrasonographic goal. Pancreatic disease is quite common and diseases thereof can mimic the clinical signs of emergency surgical cases. The accurate identification of the pancreas is very dependent on properly identifying the duodenum in cats and dogs. There is considerable difference in the relative size (length) and location of the left pancreatic limb between cats and dogs. The normal ultrasonographic and CT characteristics of the pancreas are discussed. Diseases of the pancreas are discussed in a case-based format.

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is one of the most common flexible endoscopic procedures. This chapter covers indications and contraindications, instrumentation, patient preparation and management, procedure, capsule endoscopy, normal and pathological findings, and complications. A number of therapeutic procedures are described, including placement of PEG and jejunostomy tubes. The chapter also includes four video clips.

Diagnostic imaging of rodents presents several technical challenges related to their small body size, rapid respiratory rate, reluctance to accept mechanical restraint and unusual conformation. None of these factors is insurmountable but they do necessitate modification of the radiographic imaging techniques and principles of interpretation used for dogs and cats.
