Avian influenza in backyard poultry
The UK is at increased risk of avian influenza over the winter months, owing both to the flight paths of migratory birds and the ability of the virus to survive in the environment in low temperatures. The BSAVA has put together some advice to help backyard poultry owners protect their birds from avian influenza. Thanks to improvements in nutrition, veterinary and home care, cats are living much longer than was the case 20 years ago. End of life - introduction
Euthanasia is a very common procedure, but one which brings with it a unique set of challenges for clients and veterinary professionals alike. Setting aside the procedural aspect for the moment, the collection focuses on this important topic from a pastoral point of view, which is less frequently considered. This introductory collection draws together a selection of general materials. Links to more in-depth collections focusing on client communication, client support and practice support are available via this introductory collection. Feline infectious peritonitis
Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a serious disease in cats caused by virulent mutations of an enteric feline coronavirus (FCoV). The condition has a high mortality rate. Historically, treatments have been relatively ineffective but now with the recent availability of legal medications in the UK more treatment options are available. This collection brings together a series of BSAVA resources to help in the diagnosis and treatment of FIP.

Focus on mycobacterial infections
In the January 2020 edition of Companion, Danièlle Gunn-Moore and Conor O’Halloran, respected specialists on mycobacteriosis in both cats and dogs including recently important work on Mycobacterium bovis, answered reader’s questions on mycobacterial infection. With the incidence of mycobacterial infections in small companion animals on the rise and the associated risk this poses to public health, it is important that veterinarians have access to accurate information on which to base decisions related to diagnosis and management. Owners must also be made aware of the potential zoonotic risks plus the costs and possible complications of treatment. This is a short collection to provide some of the answers to assist in your decision making when faced with mycobacterial infections.

Focus on obesity
In the January 2021 edition of Companion, EBVS Specialist in Veterinary Comparative Nutrition, Cecilia Villaverde, explains the pros and cons of feeding dry or wet food to cats, evaluating whether certain foods are more or less likely to lead to obesity. National Obesity Awareness Week (10–16 January 2024) serves as a reminder of the growing problem of obesity in our companion animals and this collection brings together a selection of BSAVA resources to help you help your patients shed some excess weight, which will be free to access during the week. Mentoring skills
A joint RCVS and BVA survey found that only half of veterinary surgeons who had graduated during the previous eight years felt that their career matched expectations and one in 10 were considering leaving the profession entirely. The BSAVA launched a pilot mentorship programme to help those in the early stages of their career to fulfil their potential and enjoy their work. Neutering awareness
‘World Spay Day’ is celebrated on the final Tuesday of February each year. The focus of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of neutering companion animals and its role in supporting animal welfare. To promote ‘World Spay Day’ this February, BSAVA has curated this collection of resources focusing on neutering techniques, client education, and animal health and welfare. Additional content has recently been added, including Ian Self’s lecture on anaesthesia for neutering, Agata Witkowska's webinar on 'Neutering techniques in small mammals' and a chapter from the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Shelter Medicine on Optimizing neutering programmes.

Non-traditional companion animals
Ownership of non-traditional companion animals (a term preferred to 'exotic pets' by BSAVA, along with the BVA and BVZS) continues to rise and these species often present challenges in practice. This collection is intended to signpost some core resources on species that may not be commonly seen by veterinarians to highlight what is possible in first opinion practice. This collection excludes wildlife, farm pets and the more common small mammals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases
Tick-borne disease has long been a risk to pets and human populations. Whilst there are only two tick-borne diseases currently considered endemic in the UK, the increase in dogs being imported into the UK, as well as the changing climate, brings a risk of non-endemic tick-borne diseases becoming endemic, creating new challenges for vets. This collection brings together resources on ticks and tick-borne diseases. In addition, the BSAVA has a Q&A for pet owners, which has been written for vets to pass on to their clients, available here.

Urinalysis
A new study, published in the September 2020 issue of the Journal of Small Animal Practice (JSAP), assessed the utility of the urine dipstick alone and combined with the urine-specific gravity (USG) for detecting proteinuria in cats. The urine dipstick was not accurate for detecting proteinuria alone, or when combined with the USG in cats. This short collection brings together additional BSAVA resources focusing on urinalysis and proteinuria in cats.

The BSAVA Formulary is the indispensable guide to drugs used in veterinary practice. BSAVA members have access to both parts of the Formulary as part of their membership benefits. Non-members may use this page to purchase a 12-month ‘Formulary Plus’ subscription, which includes part A covering cats and dogs, part B devoted to exotic pets, and access to our client drug information leaflets. The 12-month access will include any updates published during the subscription period. This is an online-only product, there is no PDF download. Please note that buying this product DOES NOT give access to the BSAVA App version of the Formulary. Printed copies of both parts of the Formulary can be purchased from the BSAVA store.
