Abstract

A trocar tube may be used for thoracostomy tube placement to remove air or fluid from the pleural space, for medical management of pyothorax, or for stabilization prior to surgical treatment of pleural space disease.

Figure T.6: The thoracostomy tube can be inserted and advanced subcutaneously to the level of the 8th intercostal space. Alternatively, an assistant can grasp the skin over the lateral thorax and pull it cranially so that the skin incision site is at the level of the 8th intercostal space.
