During this year’s Congress, BSAVA members were told the key to building a successful new veterinary clinic is thorough planning and sound advice from both inside and outside the practice. Adam Tjolle, Chief Executive of the Inglis Vets Group, explained the process that led up to the opening of its latest branch in Kirkcaldy, Fife in February 2018.

Animal welfare organizations receive hundreds of calls each year asking for advice on rehoming pets from the parents of children who have - or are at risk of developing - allergic diseases. But if a child reacts to the allergens produced by domestic animals, is it necessary to avoid any further contact? On the contrary, there is mounting evidence to suggest that keeping a pet may be just what the doctor ordered for a child with an allergic condition like asthma. John Bonner looks through the literature.

Delegates visiting the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) annual congress in Singapore from 25–28 September can attend ‘Award Lectures’ given by this year’s WSAVA Award Winners. The work of these inspirational individuals has benefited companion animals and people around the world. The WSAVA Awards are one of the few opportunities for truly global recognition in our sector with this year’s recipients drawn from the USA, Australia and Sri Lanka.

“I have seen another surgeon do this procedure and he was much more careful.” If Gloucestershire practitioner Richard Artingstall had been expecting praise from the visiting vet student on his clinical skills, then he didn’t get it. But what he did receive was a valuable lesson in the importance of honest feedback which he passed on to colleagues attending the SPVS/VMG conference that took place in Newport, South Wales earlier this year.

Jen Palfreyman, a third-year student at the Liverpool vet school, received the undergraduate Student Inspiration Award from the Kennel Club Trust in June. This recognized the value of her vacation project looking at the possibility of a novel parasite becoming established in the UK. She told John Bonner about this threat to canine health and welfare.
