Not only are certain parasites endemic to the UK expanding their demographic range, but as a result of increasing numbers of animals travelling abroad and many being imported into the UK, more exotic parasites are gaining a foothold. Ian Wright of Mount Vets and Head of ESCCAP UK & Ireland, offers advice on what to look out for in first-opinion practice to try and arrest this parasitic spread.

This year, World Mental Health Day (10 October), is focusing on mental health in the workplace. Our physical well-being is intrinsically associated with our mental-health status, so John Bonner, having been put through his paces during the Congress 2018 physiotherapy session, reports on how to look after our bodies and make sure that they can stand up to the wear and tear of daily life.

The BSAVA Big Issues stream at Congress this year featured a session on the changes to animal licensing activities intended to come into force from October 2018 in England. It outlined the impact of the changes on businesses and on those members of the veterinary profession involved in related licensing activities. With the legislation now in place, Adrienne Conroy, BSAVA Head of Policy, reflects on the background to the changes and what they mean in practical terms for businesses and vets, or their clients, who may be involved in this work.

Edinburgh graduate Cal Major stroked her way into the record books this summer as the first person to travel from Land’s End to John O’Groats on a stand-up paddleboard. Along the way she raised thousands of pounds to support mental health services for the veterinary profession and others, as well as raising awareness of the threat posed by plastic pollution to our inland and coastal waterways. She told John Bonner about the highlights of her trip.
