BSAVA is hosting a series of meetings around the country in 2018 to offer members training in ways to reduce the risk of clinical errors that can have catastrophic effects on their patients’ well-being. A key step in the process of reducing the risk of medical accidents is to stop looking for someone to blame when treatment does go wrong. John Bonner reports.

Editors Jonathan Elliott, Gregory Grauer and Jodi Westropp outline some of the highlights of this new manual and the changes that have happened in the ten years since the previous edition.

Brachycephalic dogs have been shown to rank top of the list of health and welfare concerns for small animal vets. Dr Jane Ladlow heads one of the main academic groups looking to ameliorate the health problems in these breeds. She told John Bonner what practitioner colleagues need to know and do in order to help their clients.

Dr Andrew Edney, a veterinary surgeon for 50 years, BSAVA President from 1979-80, and an individual who has been instrumental in the development of the small animal veterinary profession, sadly passed away on 3 March 2017 aged 84. Companion looks back on his life.

Surrey practitioner Wolfgang Dohne was born and educated in Kiel in Germany. He credits the 1960s television series Daktari as an early influence on his choice of career. Having served as the BSAVA’s representative for FECAVA he is now President of the pan-European association.
