A panel discussion on the importance of dental radiography, in association with the British Veterinary Dental Association (BVDA).

Many veterinarians are apprehensive when starting out with dental surgery, and this is not surprising given the relatively brief teaching of this topic at most veterinary schools. This lecture provides a grounding for the extraction of a maxillary canine tooth, with interesting case examples.

• Why dentistry doesn’t have to be terrible or scary
• An overview of the approach to the surgical extraction of an adult dog tooth
• The importance of dental radiography with case examples
• Basic information on nerve blocks
• The benefits of mucogingival flaps and how to perform them

  Dental disease is a common syndrome in pet rabbits and high on the differential list in any rabbit presenting with reduced appetite, anorexia or pseudo-anorexia (not eating but showing interest in food).1Elisabetta Mancinelli, of Valley Veterinary Hospital in Cardiff, provides a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and effectively managing dental disease in rabbits.

  In the July 2020 edition of Companion, Matthew Oxford, of New Forest Veterinary Dental Service, offered a pragmatic approach to the extraction of root tips in dogs and cats. In this month’s article, Matthew briefly describes tooth resorption and provides a series of steps in order to make decisions regarding treatment options for each affected tooth.

This chapter provides information on topics not or only briefly covered in previous chapters, including select intra- and postoperative considerations, use of antibiotics, the role of technicians/nurses and dental hygienists, safety in the workplace, equipment maintenance, considerations about dental scaling without anaesthesia, home oral hygiene, and communication with clients and other professionals.
