Abstract

Antibacterials are essential medicines but their increasing use has led to an increase in antimicrobial resistance. Veterinarians have a professional duty to use antibacterials responsibly. This section covers responsible prescribing and helps a practice to develop its own guidelines. See also the BSAVA/SAMSoc PROTECT ME guidance. Self-assessment questions are included.

Last updated August 2024 to reflect changes in the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR). Changes are highlighted in blue in the PDF version.

Figures

Figure 15.2 For critically important antibiotics some practices have implemented prescribing protocols that only allow prescribing with evidence of culture or in specific life-threatening situations. This will typically require sign off from a senior member of the clinical team and can be integrated into the practice management system.
