Abstract
Most agents used for analgesia in small animal patients fall into the opioid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug groups. The different categories of drugs influence pain processing through different mechanisms and they can therefore be used in combination to maximize analgesia. This chapter reviews the general properties of analgesic drugs and offers a description of individual drugs within each category.
