14.1
Goitre: there is an obvious cervical swelling due to an enlarged, cystic thyroid gland. Not all goitres will be as obvious as this one. Palpation of an enlarged thyroid is most readily performed with the cat sitting in front of you and facing away. The cat’s head is elevated slightly and the cervical groove palpated with the thumb and first two fingers, from the larynx ventrally to the thoracic inlet. In most cases, the thyroid gland is felt as a small round or oval structure slipping below the fingers. Some people find it easier to palpate alternate sides with different hands. © 2013 British Small Animal Veterinary Association

Facial erythema and pruritus following 4 weeks’ medication with methimazole therapy. This side effect can be extremely severe, causing severe self-trauma and necessitating immediate cessation of treatment. These signs resolved within 3 weeks of ceasing therapy. © 2013 British Small Animal Veterinary Association
