Abstract
Hypocalcaemia is most commonly diagnosed in cats following thyroidectomy for the treatment of hyperthyroidism. When significant hypocalcaemia occurs, prompt identification, investigation and treatment are required. This chapter focuses on differential diagnosis, diagnostic approach and empirical treatment. Quick reference guide: Treatment of hypocalcaemia.

4.4.1
Lateral radiograph of a kitten with nutritional hyperparathyroidism due to feeding of a minced beef-only diet since weaning. The poor calcium content of this diet stimulates secondary hyperparathyroidism, and bone resorption occurs in response to the hypocalcaemia. The bones are very poorly mineralized and of markedly reduced radiopacity compared to normal. © 2013 British Small Animal Veterinary Association
