4.4.1 Lateral radiograph of a kitten with nutritional hyperparathyroidism due to feeding of a minced beef-only diet since weaning. The poor calcium content of this diet stimulates secondary hyperparathyroidism, and bone resorption occurs in response to the hypocalcaemia. The bones are very poorly mineralized and of markedly reduced radiopacity compared to normal.
